The Schmettau-Schulenburgsche map of the 18th century is the most outstanding historical map for the greatest part of eastern Germany concerning its detailed information and coverage of a very great area (Fig. I and 2). Unfortunately, up to this day there existed no comprehensive legend leading to restrictions in readability or interpretation of land use forms, respectively. In total, there exist 270 sections, which 38 of covered partly or wholly the State of Brandenburg. With regard to several historical descriptions of the landscape we produced a legend (Fig. 3 and Tab. 1) with critical comments (Tab. 2) for the State of Brandenburg. Despite some restrictions, there is no doubt that the Schmettausche map is absolutely valuable for reconstruction of former land use. Above all, the proof of identity of ancient woodlands by overlapping historical with actual maps can be helpful for the overall forestry planning. Woodland with a long habitat continuity are potentially higher in diversity of true forest plant and animal species. Therefore, they should be considered as previous areas to maintain species diversity, interconnection of habitats, and for conversion of coniferous to mixed or deciduous forest.
