My parents have heard me talk a lot about honey bees. They have listened to my stories and faithfully read my articles, as good parents would, but something changed when I first showed them the inner workings of a hive. While in Hawaii, I took them through a tour of a brood nest, my mother snapped a hundred photos and they experienced the marvelous feeling of being amidst a hail of placid, buzzing bees. It did not take long after this lesson for my father to muse about having his own hive in WesternMassachusetts.
