In Japan, a breeding of Finless porpoise have begun in three aquariums which are located in Ise-Bay, Mikawa-Bay and Inland Sea, in the early 1960s. There are 22 individuals in six Japanese aquariums at the end of Dec., 2013. In Toba aquarium, breeding of Finless porpoise has been going on since 1963, and the first calf was born in captivity in 1976. Under the permission of the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and Fisheries, four Finless porpoises were captured in 2004. After that four calves were born. One of the calves which was born in 2013 has been raised by humans. It helps to obtain valuable information and establishes the technology for rescue in a calf which needs hand rearing.
