In Korea, hydrogen/fuel cell technology has attracted considerable research attention from academia and industry since President Jae-in Moon announced the hydrogen economy roadmap in January this year. The "Roadmap for Promoting the Hydrogen Economy" aims to produce 6.2 million vehicles (domestic sales : 2.9 million vehicles, exports : 3.3 million vehicles) and construct 1,200 hydrogen stations by 2040. In addition, 2.1 GW fuel cells are planned to be installed in households/buildings I thus, it is expected that Korea will enter a hydrogen fuel cell society by 2040. Since hydrogen/fuel cell technology has drawn much interest, this article briefly introduces the fuel cell technology being developed in the fuel cell laboratory of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). This article focuses on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells to introduce the study of electrolyte membranes, catalysts, membrane electrode assemblies, and stacks/peripheral devices.
