Facilities for social welfare have become highly developed over the past several years. The number ofescalators has recently shown a rapid increase in urban areas focusing on railway stations, as well asin regional areas supported by urban redevelopment and renewal demand. Such progress hasprovided many opportunities for people to use escalators, particularly the elderly population. In these circumstances, the forms of installation and use of escalators have also becomeincreasingly diversified. This has resulted in demand for new technologies beyond thoseconventionally applied in escalator design, based on approaches such as harmony with theenvironment or universal design concepts. This paper introduces new technologies used in Toshiba escalators in response to these changesthat have taken place.
