IHI has been developing the technology for environmental assessment, such as wind tunnel experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Recently, the visible plume from cooling towers has become the new object of environmental assessment. Thelegal system and the technology for environmental assessment and protection of cooling towers are described. Prediction methods (wind tunnel experiment, several empirical models and (CFD) and their characteristics are briefly explained. The predictionmethods are applied to a practical conditions of a large cooling tower and the results are compared with observed data. The observed data and the predicted results almost agreed, and coincided with past research understanding of plume behavior.
