Investigator initiated research, known as IIR, is clinical or pre-clinical research initiated, planned, and conducted by an outside investigator or institution, not pharmaceutical, medical device or analytic company. It is designed for the development of specific and defined medical knowledge. The sponsor of IIR may be an individual, institution, private research organization, private or academic organization, cooperative group, or government agency, and responsible for the study conduct of all regulatory activities associated with the research activity.
