Walter is a 44-year-old African American man who I met at a National Kidney Foundation KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) event last summer. Walter weighed more than 350 pounds and had a blood pressure of 220/110 mm Hg. Walter also had chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3, with a serum creatinine of 1.7 mg/dL, an estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 55 mL/min/1.73 m~2, and proteinuria, and hadn't seen a doctor in more than 10 years.
