In order to evaluate antimicrobial activity of ceftriaxone (CTRX), minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of CTRX and control drugs were determined against clinical isolates from purulent meningitis,community-acquired pneumonia and liver & biliary tract infection that were obtained in our laboratory in 1997.The results are summarized as follows;1.The MIC of CTRX against penicillin(PC)-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PSSP) was <=0.025 mug/ml, and that value was lower than those of control drugs. 2. The MICgo of CTRX against PC-intermediate S. pneumoniae (PISP)/PC-resistant S.pneumoniae (PRSP) was lower than those of cefazolin (CEZ),cefotiam (CTM), sulbactam/cefoperazone (SBT/CPZ) and ampicillin (ABPC),and was slightly higher than that of imipenem (IPM).3.CTRX showed strong antimicrobial activities against beta-lactamase producing and non-producing Haemophilus influenzae. The MIC_(90) of CTRX was markedly greater than those of control drugs. 4. The MIC distribution of CTRX against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae was in a lower concentration range than those of all control drugs.5.From those results,CTRX was found to be clinically useful against purulent meningitis,community-acquired pneumonia and liver & biliary tract infection.
