A case of solitary papilloma in the lung field

Background. A solitary papilloma in the lung field is rare, and its diagnosis is seldom made preoperatively. Case. A 34-year-old man was admitted for treatment of diabetes mellitus. Chest X-ray film showed an abnormal shadow in the left lower lung field. Chest CT scan showed a well-defined tumor (1.0 x 1.5 cm in size) with pleural indentation in left S10. Because a preoperative diagnosis was not made, excisional biopsy was made by thoracotomy. The frozen-section specimen was diagnosed as adenosquamous carcinoma and standard left lower lobectomy and lymph node dissection was performed. The histopathological diagnosis turned out to be mixed squamous and glandular papilloma. Conclusion. A solitary papilloma in the lung field must be aggressively resected by surgery for diagnosis and treatment.
