A simulation study of quality of service assurance in an academic network using actual network traffic data

It has been reported that traffic in wide-area backbone networks has self-similarity, which badly affects quality of service. We built a system which can collect actual traffic data on SINET. In this paper, we first report the charecteristics of SINET traffic. Then we use the traffic data to evaluate a couple of queueing models which can provide different levels of quality of service, and show how self-similarity affects QoS features from the viewpoint of queueing delay.
