摘要

Recent reports on science achievement in the United States reveal that much work remains to be done if our students are to be competitive with those of other countries. Although the reports focus on K-12 teaching and learning, the picture they paint has a graphic message for the introductory college physics course as well. I cite sample responses to the problem and call on teachers to formulate their own. I single out a particularly troubling level of intellectual development and consider it in some detail.
