The basic properties of the relativistic string, including its simplest modes of motion, are shown to be derivable in an elementary manner directly from the postulate of constant tension. The full set of equations of motion can be derived from the same principle by employing slightly more advanced mathematical concepts. Finally a heuristic derivation of the Nambu-Goto action is presented. (C) 1996 American Association of Physics Teachers. [References: 5]
