A systematic method to determine the Lagrangian directly from the equations of motion

Based on reversing Hamilton's principle, the Lagrangian can be obtained directly from the equations of motion. The method is illustrated for a relativistic particle moving in an external field, the electromagnetic field, and a damped harmonic oscillator. (C) 2002 American Association of Physics Teachers.
