Heritability (based on the sire component) of the total length, survival rate, and color abnormality in fry and juvenile hirame, Paralichthys olivaceus, was estimated by half-sib variance analysis according to a hierarchical mating system. A genetic analysis of total length, at 0, 10, and 40 days after hatching, showed that heritability were very low, and maternal effect were high, indicating that egg quality influenced the total length in fry and juvenile strongly. The estimation of both the heritability and the maternal effect on survival rate at 40 days after hatching were low. The results suggest parental heritable factor did not affect juvenile survival rate. In the case of color abnormality, the heritability was high, but the maternal effect was low. These suggest the egg quality did not affect color abnormality, and the artificial individual selection would improve color abnormality hereditarily.
