Methods of Evaluation for Insulin Resistance in Dogs

Insulin resistance is a risk factor in diabetes mellitus. Insulin resistance is defined as "the condition whereby the biological insulin response is sub-standard, despite a normal level of insulin secretion" particularly in reference to muscular tissue. This abnormality causes the glucose uptake into the cells to decline, raising the blood sugar level or the serum insulin concentration. Considering that the functions of insulin affect many organs and processes, insulin resistance should be assessed,and the organs in which insulin resistance is occurring and the level of that resistance should be confirmed, to select the method of treatment.
