In memoriam: Dr Fredrick P. Zuspan, January 20, 1922-June 2, 2009.

Dr Fredrick P. Zuspan, Fred or "the big Z" as he was known to all of us, died the 7th of June at the age of 87 due to prostatic carcinoma. This is an irreplaceable loss to the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, to the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, to all who knew him and worked with him, and to me personally since he was my best friend for over 50 years. It seems such a short time ago but it was in 1969 that Fred and I were invited to be associate editors of AJOG by Drs Howard Taylor, Alan Barnes, and John Brewer. Drs Taylor and Barnes retired from the Journal at that time, leaving John, Fred, and I to plot its course over the next 30 years. Fred's assignments were the eastern United States and England, and Letters to the Editors. Fred loved working with the Journal for many reasons, 3 of which are listed below:
