Three-Dimensional Fracture Classification and Treatment Reference System Based on Mobile Platform

Fracture is the most common disease in orthopedic clinic. It is difficult for orthopedic surgeons, especially for young surgeons to memorize each fracture definition due to its complex classification hierarchies. The purpose of this paper is to present a newly developed three-dimensional (3D) facture classification and treatment reference software system based on mobile platform. The software system contained a fracture database covering more than 1000 total fracture categories with various classifications, along with the detailed definition and relevant treatment reference. 3D fracture models were established from CT images of a healthy volunteer by using the reverse engineering technology, and then visualized on the mobile platform by using Jpct-AE and OpenGI-ES 2.0 for android development. By using gesture detecting technology and fragment picking algorithm, an interactive user interface was designed to enable users to choose certain fracture fragments and check them individually in detail. Proper data format and memory space recycling mechanism were applied to reduce the size of the whole system, thus effectively saving the memory size to make the software run more smoothly on mobile platforms. The clinical application showed that the developed software system proved to be a significant and innovative tool for the orthopedic surgeons and medical students to make correct and quick fracture diagnosis and effective selection of fracture treatment.
