Solid State Ceramics Foams utilizing their Superplasticity

Porous ceramics are widely used as filter, catalysis support, light weight structural material, thermal and/or sound insulators and so on, where inherent ceramic properties, such as non-flammability, corrosion resistance, favorable hardness and large mechanical strength are utilized. Open pores are mainly introduced to the porous ceramics when they are used as filter and catalysis support; partial sintering or insufficient sintering is conducted on green powder compacts incorporated with pore formers, such as organic binder and carbon. Since the sintering accompanies pore exclusion, the sintering must be terminated before the completion to make porous ceramics with large porosity. On the other hand, closed pores should be preferentially introduced to be used as thermal and sound insulators.
