In this work, a magnetic inhibitor (MI) was first prepared by using p-hydroxybenzaldehyde anchored onto magnetic chitosan (MCS). Its inhibition effect to the free-radical polymerization was studied. The MI with a size of less than 1 mu M was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). For potential application, MIs have been used to inhibit the thermal polymerization of styrene, and they can be removed from the monomers conveniently by magnetic separation. The corresponding inhibitory effect has been investigated through the measurement of the induction period with the dilatometer method. The results show that the inhibitory effect of MI was eight times higher than that of the nonadditive inhibitor for the equivalent volume of styrene. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 2019.
