摘要

A 49-year-old male presented in the Emergency Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) with bums to his right lower leg. An assessment of the burns was carried out and the patient was admitted to the Burns Unit at QEHB for further investigation and treatment. Currently the Burns Unit uses a Laser Doppler Imager Mark I (LDI) shown in Figure / to obtain a clearer picture of the degree of burn sustained; it also gives an indication of the healing potential and therefore the level of surgical intervention required. This process uses a near infra-red laser beam to map tissue blood flow over a specified area. The device is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and reportedly has a 97% accuracy rate.
