Biomaterials in medical devices: An Interview with Jorg Vienken of Fresenius Medical Care, Germany

JP: Can you please tell us about your role at Fresenius Medical Care JV: First of all, I should say a bit about Fresenius Medical Care: the company is the world market leader for the therapy of patients with kidney disease i.e. haemodialysis. In the past two decades, the company has undergone a metamorphosis and has changed from being a successful plastic and device manufacturer in 1996 to a provider of clinical therapies currently. Consequently, this change implies a change of profile for Frese-nius's employees. These are no longer engineers exclusively dedicated to material and device development, but also clinicians and other medical professionals cooperating with engineers. Their common target is to optimize kidney failure therapies.
