Effects of Impact Conditions on the Shock Response of PZT-5A Ceramics for FEG Devices

Shock wave compression of poled PZT-5A ceramics for a ferroelectric generator (PEG) results in rapid depoling and release of bound charge. In this study, impact experiments with a PZT-5A FEG (ferroelectric generator) were conducted by using a gas-gun facility with 40 mm in diameter. The FEG units were molded with an insulating epoxy. The voltages generated in the PZT-5A sample during the impacts were recorded by using an external circuit in order to examine the effects of the impact conditions. We made and tested a current transformer and a voltage-divider circuit that could measure electric pulses having a peak voltage of 200 kV, a peak current of 50 A, awl a pulse duration of several mu s. The effects of impact on the shock strength of a normally poled PZT-5A PEG were studied within the pressure range of 2 - 5 GPa. No electrical breakdown occured inside the PZT-5A sample and in the external circuit in any experiment. The maximum values of the output voltages were almost constant in the pressure range from 2.4 GPa to 3.8 GPa and increased for a pressure 4.3 GPa. We also confirmed that the output voltage depended on the load resistance and the load capacitance of the external circuit.
