ANALYSIS OF RELATIVE PERFORMANCES OF COPPER CHROME ARSENATE (CCA) AND COPPER CHROME BORON (CCB) WOOD PRESERVATIVES IN ACCELERATED TERMITE TESTS

The efficacy of copper chrome boron (CCB) has been tested for the first time on Malaysian termites (Isotera): Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren which is the important economical timber pests. Koompassia malaccensis and Shorea curtisii wood blocks wereimpregnated under vacuum treated with three concentrations of aqueous CCB. These samples were exposed in a no-choice test to determine protection against subterranean termite and the results were compared to those treated with CCA at the same concentrations. Mean weight loss of CCB -treated test blocks ranged from 1.075 to 1.460gfor K. malaccensis and 0.807 to 1.126gfor S. curtisii. Test blocks treated with CCB were completely protected by 6% for both wood species tested but weight loss and visual rating in similar blocks challenged with CCA was 2% at the given concentrations. This study was initiated to determine the potential of CCB for use as a pressure treatment to protect wood from attack by subterranean termites.
