ENHANCING THE UV DURABILITY OF EPOXY COATINGS: Waterborne Acrylic-Epoxy Hybrid Coatings for Steel

Every resin chemistry used in coatings science has both benefits and disadvantages. For this reason, each generic class of resin excels in certain applications and has weaknesses that preclude its use in other applications. Important features of coatings can include properties such as adhesion, corrosion resistance, chemical and solvent resistance, UV durability or hardness, as well as attributes such as raw material cost, potlife, volatile organic compound (VOC) content, flammability, and other environmental, health and safety concerns such as toxicity. Finding a coating with the best balance of these properties and attributes for each end-use application is often complicated by the weaknesses inherent to each specific chemistry.
