Responsibility, Authority and Accountability

One of the things that I have encountered over and over again in my career is the difficulty we have in understanding the concepts and differences of responsibility, authority and accountability at every step of the ladder in the coatings industry, and whether in the office or the field. The scope of SSPC QPI states the following: "The purpose of this procedure is to determine whether a contractor has a corporate organization that clearly defines the authority and responsibilities of positions typically reguired for operation of an industrial/marine coating contracting firm ... The contractor has overall and ultimate responsibility to maintain all QPI requirements when delivered directly by subcontractors."
