This study combines a vibroacoustic analysis and an auditory evaluation of sounds radiated from a thin plate with various boundary conditions. In a first experiment, the boundary conditions of the plate are considered as uniform viscoelastic ones. The vibroacoustic behavior of this kind of structure has been investigated by different researchers. The different studies have emphasized the strong influence of the boundary conditions on the vibroacoustic response of the plate. However, their influence on auditory perception is not known and far from obvious. A second experiment is carried out for an application by considering the example of a pane of glass with non-uniform viscoelastic boundary conditions, made of various joints and blocks positioned between the glass and its frame. In both cases the vibrating plate is modeled using the finite element method and artificial stimuli are generated using a sound synthesis technique. Stimuli are submitted to a panel of subjects who are asked to give preference and dissimilarity judgments. The results of the auditory evaluation are then coupled with the results of the physical analysis of the plate response in order to provide further information in terms of structural design recommendations.
