摘要

Retrospective outcome accumulation data are presented for peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) placed in hospitalized patients. From 1999 through 2002, a total of 4257 PICCs with catheter dwell days involving 46,854 inpatient days were studied. Outcomes were obtained through medical record reviews. Complication events involving exit-site infection, bloodstream infection, thrombus, and mechanical phlebitis are presented as events per 1000 catheter dwell days of experience. Accumulated information was used to support the placement of PICCs for vascular access. The mean completion of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) therapy using PICCs, without significant complication was 83%.
