SEEDS AND PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS IN THE BASQUE CONTEXT: ETHNOGRAPHIES ON BIOTECHNOLOGICAL BODIES AND LIFE CONFIGURATION

Taking as a pretext the merger between the Bayer and Monsanto companies, in this article we discuss an ethnography about recovery processes in depression and another about the social and cultural processes which affect the crop biodiversity. Specifically, we focus on anti-depressive psychotropic drugs and Jack tomato seeds, materialities which we define as biotechnological bodies that function in their environments by configuring themselves. The goal is to see how, through these objects/subjects, a living and liveable thing, a dead thing and that which does not deserve to be alive is generated. Incorporating feminist contributions surrounding the notion of life, we want to rethink what is understood by life and the liveable, and how the reproduction of the life is being generated within the framework of a globally biotechnological and biopolitical order. We will see, then, that in both works these materialities are constituted as naturecultures and that there is major control of the diversity of life forms around them, giving rise to a homogenization of all living things. This control of life and diversity is, ultimately, control of the future and possibilities of existence.
