E Guinea hopes to defy history with new round ready

Equatorial Guinea will launch a new licensing round early next month in an ambitious attempt to attract new operators. The country was once at the forefront of operators' minds following discoveries like Ceiba and Okume by Triton but exploration has seen limited success in recent years. Licensing activity has dropped correspondingly. The last round was held in 2014 with all open acreage drawn up into 14 blocks but none were awarded. In the same year ExxonMobil did take a swathe of acreage on the maritime border with Nigeria in the northwest of the country's waters off Bioko Island, to the west and south of the Zafiro field and as far down as the Ophir Energy's successful Block R.
