The Ghana Gas Co is expected to appeal a ruling stopping all work on the already delayed Ghana Gas Project because compensation has not been paid to local chiefs. A Sekondi High Court ruled in favour of the Omanhene of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area and ordered that the company and main contractor Sinopec could not carry out operations on the land on which the US $750m project is sited. Construction work on the plant, which will take in gas from the offshore fields, was originally scheduled to be completed last year. However, it has been delayed because of financial and technical problems and the current timetable sees it operational in September. In this latest delay, an affidavit in support of the court order stated that none of the companies had lawfully acquired the land from the traditional authority.
