Complying with OSHA-Use of Personal Protective Equipment in the Iron and Steel Industry

Although steel and ironworker injury rates are declining, nearly 16,000 workers per year are injured on the job. Worker protection is a relatively recent invention. The first hard hats were invented during the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930s. Respiratory protection was limited, and most workers refused to wear them. There was a general complacency toward worker safety, and work-related illnesses were considered a part of the job. There was no OSHA or NIOSH.Today, respirators are digitally designed in multiple sizes to fit almost every worker. Early bulky and heavy safety spectacles of heat-treated glass have been replaced with lighter and more impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses. Optical clarity of lenses is no longer an excuse for not wearing them. Hearing protectors are available in a wide range of styles: foam plugs in corded or uncorded varieties; disposable down plugs and earmuffs for clearer communication without sacrificing protection; multiple-position muffs in various styles; earmuffs for clear one-way or two-way communication; and banded hearing protectors for workers concerned about ear canal irritation.Personal protective equipment manufacturers use the latest technology in their production processes. A multitude of training tools is available, including videos and technical service center specialists to answer questions on regulatory compliance and to make proper recommendations. Both manufacturers and industrial hygienists understand that worker acceptance is vital, and comfort, fit and style are important. With proper communication, education and leadership, the injury rate will continue to decline.
