The hot rolling of thin strip below 2.0 mm on a CSP (compact strip production) rolling mill with six to seven mill stands requires - besides a very stable material flow - a roll gap lubrication and roll gap cooling system in order to avoid mill vibrations and achieve a high surface quality. These systems are normally installed from stand F2, without the very last stand (Figure 1). With maximum reductions of partly more than 60%, the roll forces are very high and vibration of the mill stands occurs. Without roll gap cooling, these forces lead to peeling of the work rolls and surface defects of the strip.
