LINGUAL SARCOMA AND ITS TREATMENT WITH PARTIAL GLOSSECTOMY IN A PET RABBIT (ORYCTOLAGLIS CUNICULUS)

A 2-year-old female rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented for significant ptyalism and anorexia for 2 days. A mass was observed behind the upper incisors by lifting the upper lips at the diastema level. An oral examination was performed under general anesthesia. A hard, irregular, pink, and partially ulcerated mass measuring 2.5 cm was observed on the lower side of the right cranial edge of the tongue. A surgical treatment with partial glossectomy was performed. A histopathologic examination revealed a high-grade lingual sarcoma. Oral soft tissue neoplasias are very rare in rabbit. Lingual neoplasms including papilloma, a spontaneous neoplasia, and squamous cell carcinomas, which are experimentally induced, have been reported in rabbit. Rabbit is used as an experimental model for human lingual neoplasia and glossectomy. To our knowledge, this is the first reported lingual sarcoma in a pet rabbit. Copyright 2018 Elsevier Inc.
