Discovery of the Conus lightbourni Petuch, 1986 holotype

On Friday 14 March 2008, BillFenzan arrived at the Delaware Museumof Natural History (DMNH) with aspecimen whose arrival had been eagerlyanticipated for many years – the holotypeof Conus lightbourni. This specimen wascollected in 1973, described by Ed Petuchin 1986, and documented as missing fromthe DMNH collection in 1991 (Bieler &Bradford, 1991). Over the years, there hasbeen much speculation about thewhereabouts of the shell. Many concludedthat the shell had been sold to a privatecollector and was hidden away.
