When the Spanish explorer Don Alvaro de Mendana `rediscovered' this archipelago in 1568, he believed he had found the source of King Solomon's fabled treasure. Mendana's dreams were soon tarnished, and he died of malaria shortly afterwards, but the Spanish name "Yslas de Salomon" stuck. I visited the Solomon Islands in August 2010 in search of molluscan treasure.
