Crystal-ball gazing forecasters, who predicted last year that the US light vehicle market would be subjected to a moderate dive to a near consensus 15m plus sales could not have been more wrong. As it turned out last year's sales went into free fall - down almost 3 million to a 16-year low of just 13.2m units - thus pushing Detroit's intrinsic vehicle makers to the brink of bankruptcy. While hardly anyone now appears willing to issue a current year vehicle sales forecast, most believe that today's vehicle sales slump still has a lot further to run before it gets better.
