Social Behavior and Autism Traits in a Sex ChromosomalDisorder: Klinefelter (47XXY) Syndrome

Although Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) hasbeen associated with psychosocial difficulties, knowledgeof the social behavioral phenotype is limited. We examinedspecific social abilities and autism traits in Klinefeltersyndrome. Scores of 31 XXY men on the Scale for Inter-personal Behavior and the Autism Spectrum Questionnairewere compared to 24 and 20 control men respectively. XXYmen reported increased distress during social interactionsand less engagement in specific social behaviors. In theXXY group, levels of autism traits were significantly higheracross all dimensions of the autism phenotype. Thesefindings call for a clinical investigation of vulnerability toautism in Klinefelter syndrome. Klinefelter syndrome mightserve as a model for studying a role of the X chromosome insocial behavioral dysfunction and autism-like behavior.
