Facilitating a simulation activity: effectively employing the educator/facilitator elements of practice for the nursing professional development specialist.

Some learn by hearing. Some learn by seeing. We all learn by doing. In an effort to creatively integrate skills evaluation and critical thinking in our new nurses, we developed an educational offering entitled "The Amazing Shift." In this activity, small teams of graduate nurses in our medical-surgical residency are tasked with managing simulated patient scenarios within specific time constraints, similar to managing a multipatient assignment on their unit. This "low-tech" approach has consistently been selected as one of the most meaningful classroom-based activities by the participants.
