Joint Commission issues Texting Clarification

The Joint Commission released a clarification document stating that the use of secure text messaging for patient care orders is not acceptable. This clarification follows the May 2016 issue of Perspectives, in which the Joint Commission acknowledged that secure text messaging now has the ability to address relevant privacy and security concerns-a position reversal from 2011 when the commission said it was not acceptable "to text orders for patient care, treatment, or services to hospitals or other health care settings" due to safety/security concerns.
