Air BP Pursues Strategy of Disciplined Growth for Aviation

Air BP has a long history that goes back over 80 years working on the technical and commercial sides of aviation. To support its customer commitments, it also relies heavily on supplies from BP's trading affiliate - which cover 50% of its jet fuel sales to commercial airlines, the military and general aviation customers. Air BP's strategy of "investing to grow" bears the fingerprints of BP's new CEO, Robert Dudley, who took over the reins of the company in the wake of the Macondo oil spill. Air BP's integration with trading dates back to the early 1970s, when changes in the company's asset base resulted in a shift in the BP corporate culture from supply planning toward trading. That shift occurred more than 40 years ago and continues to support and inform its downstream operations. BP is now in the process of restructuring its Integrated Supply & Trading (IST) division in the face of changes in the trading environment, with a view to creating the right long-term value chains (JFI Jul.5,p1).
