China’s Air Travel Restart Offers Template for Rest of Globe

The aviation sector is keenly focused on China as a tem-plate for restarting air travel in the rest of the world. Two months after lockdown restrictions were lifted, China’s domestic market is adapting to the new normal for avia-tion. Once the world’s leading growth market, China’s jet fuel demand is mired in the doldrums. Energy Intelligence projects that Chinese jet demand may plunge by 30% from its 2019 peak of 876,000 b/d to some 604,000 b/d this year. With Chinese airlines accounting for about 25% of all domestic markets worldwide, their performance is an important bellwether for the global industry. Domestic flights are spurring the recovery in Chinese passenger traf-fic, which means that airlines are forgoing the lion’s share of their revenue generated by international services (JFI Jun.8’20).
