Classic lathe design employs a gearbox to allow for convenient switching between operations of turning and screw cutting. In contrast to heavier lathes, many bench top lathes use removable gears or pulleys to achieve this purpose. Unfortunately, swapping gears/pulleys is tedious and occasionally requires re-tensioning the belts to compensate for slight variations in geometry.
