Porosity is one of the defects most frequently encountered in aluminum die casting. This porosity can lead to leak paths which results in the cast part not being functionally sound, clearly a big concern for pressure tight parts such as for engines and transmissions. Porosity formation leads to costly scrap loss and creates waste in materials, energy and production time. Like any other manufacturing industry, die casters need to achieve specific yields, and to account for scrapped castings, they usually need to increase production by 5-10 per cent. Naturally, if the castings that are destined for scrap can be recovered, then die casters can stand to benefit greatly. Vacuum impregnation is one such way of providing a permanent seal against porosity.
