Server cabinets keep cool: A new approach to cabinet thermal management has been devised by Knurr to keep temperatures inside server cabinets low: a water-cooled closed-loop heat exchanger system

With the ever increasing power and high heat dissipation levels of computer equipment, especially in large server clusters, a solution was needed to ensure the contents is kept cool. To meet the needs, enclosure manufacturer Knurr has developed a new approach. In mid 2004, the company launched CoolTherm, an environmentally self-contained electronic cabinet design. Recently, however, it announced the latest version - a 50U high server cabinet. CoolTherm uses a 'water cooled' closed-loop heat exchanger system which is said to provide a dramatic advance in cabinet thermal management and the ability to control far higher power and heat loads than has been possible until now, says the company. The results of this will enable cabinet equipment densities and operational performance to be improved while computer room floor areas and facility operating costs can be reduced.
