High bandwidth flat panel satellite antennas could be available for offshore use in the near future months. The oil and gas industry can expect to see flat panel antennas for high bandwidth offshore satellite communications soon, says Rolf Berge, director of products with satellite communications company Speedcast. These can replace the "mushrooms" or large, white radomes - the antennas which need to be always pointing directly at a satellite, and so need a complex system of gyroscopes, accelerometers, motors and belts to keep it locked on the satellite as the ship rocks or turns, moving the satellite in 3 axes, and protecting the antenna inside a large, white radome.
