Maternal Third Trimester Ferritin Level and Subsequent Labour

Activation ol the maternal inflammatory response is a frequent finding in pregnancy, and it is often associated with complications including preterm labor and pre-eclampsia. Maternal serum ferritin, in its role of an acute phase reactant, has been shown to be elevated in women with subsequent preterm birth. However, the relationship between ferritin level and subsequent spontaneous labor has not been examined. In an ongoing prospective study on the effect of maternal iron supplementation on pregnancy outcome, maternal serum ferritin level at 28-30 weeks gestation was measured together with the complete blood count in accordance with our management protocol.
