The author describes differences in the attitudes of farmers towards land as revealed by surveys carded out in the summer of 1999. In the context of Poland's future integration with the European Union she presents the attitude of Polish farmers to the question of the sale of land to foreigners, to the sale of land in general, the sale of land under special circumstances, and the purchase of land as a way of investing one's savings. Most farmers (90 percent) refuse foreigners the right to buy land in Poland. Many farmers would like to preserve the land they own, but many are ready to sell it under different circumstances. On the other hand, only 6 percent of the surveyed farmers declare the desire to purchase land. The presentation of the results of the conducted surveys is accompanied by an extensive commentary on the contemporary role of land, agriculture and rural community in Europe as well as a historical commentary presenting the evolution of the meaning of land for farmers in Poland.
