Case 105: Temperature distribution along a flare line

During an engineer's career, many interesting questions come up that may not have a ready or good answer. However, there are those who are willing to suggest a solution without any supporting data. A specialized consultant can always be called in to address the problem, but recommending a consultant does not usually enhance an engineer's career. During my career, management was not usually interested in how a problem was solved-only that it was solved in a timely and cost-effective manner and that the equipment was brought back online safely. For major problems, my contribution to an investigation team was to use analytical techniques to develop or analyze the data. This increased the probability of success and made me confident in my recommendations and decisions. This approach has worked well for me for more than 45 yr.
