For a process facility, guaranteeing maximum profit over its lifecycle while increasing safety and taking care of environmental aspects means continuous improvement toward operational excellence. From this perspective, advanced process engineering makes an impact on each of the successive lifecycle stages shown in FIG. 1-feasibility design, operation and upgrades. Modern design tools, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or dynamic simulation, are standard practice in many industrial sectors other than hydrocarbon processing. These flow dynamic tools play a key role in reducing engineering design costs and lead times, while allowing manufacturers to continue to deliver new and innovative solutions: raising the aerodynamic lift of an airplane, ensuring adequate cooling of an electronic device or meeting environmental regulations for an automobile, for example. Advanced analysis of flow dynamics reduces design time and provides practical tools to creatively and systematically explore new designs and modify existing ones for high-performance processes.
